CONSTRUCTION.

Take a look at the photo on the left, you will see how the base is just supported by a plinth at the front of the furniture. This is the same at the back and this is all that supports the base, this is the industry standard for suites supplied in to the UK. Now take a look at the photo on the right, this is the construction we use at Cane Direct, the noggin you can see in the corner is used in all four corners, not only that, look carefully and you can see there are no gaps at the side of the base. That is because we screw our bases into the frame all the way round, this process not only gives the base real support but also the frame. Look at the photo on the left and you can see a gap running down both sides, this is because, as mentioned in cane quality. Grade A cane is not standard and therefore you cannot get a good fixing into the thin cane with the base. Our furniture is built to last. We screw the base into the frame all the way round 2 at the front 2 on each side and 2 at the back as well as resting on 4 supports in each corner .How long do think the construction on the left is going to last, with the base just resting on 2 plinths and nothing else? Also some thing we cannot show a picture of is how the arms, back and front are connected. We cannot show an image because the furniture is already built, and for obvious reasons you cannot see inside the furniture. How ever we can explain.

All cane furniture is shipped in sections and put together in the UK, because we can fit more products on the container; it has to be done this way because shipping costs are so high. Since time began this process has been used and is by no means detrimental to the quality of the furniture. What is detrimental to the quality of the furniture is how it is put together once in the UK. At Cane Direct we use the best system; we use 4” high quality rattan screws 8 down each side of the furniture and 8 through the bases in to the frame, giving the furniture real strength. Again this is why we can give a 10 year guarantee.

Some companies use what they call a nut and bolt system, this is a really terrible way to build furniture. The front and back come from the factory with the nut pre drilled into the cane, then to build them you use an allen key and put a bolt through a pre drilled hole in the arm and tighten. This is a very quick way of, assembling your suite here in the UK which is why it is used, quicker = lower labour costs.

After 15 years involvement in cane furniture we can categorically state this method degrades over time. The bolt heads and nuts perish and crack the cane and become loose which in turn will give you a loose frame.

BEFORE YOU MAKE YOUR PURCHASE ASK THE FOLLOWING.

ARE THE BASES SCREWED INTO THE FRAME?

ARE THE BASES SUPPORTED IN EACH CORNER?

ARE THE BASES RESTING JUST ON PLINTHS?

ARE THE FRAMES PUT TOGETHER BY SCREWS OR NUTS AND BOLTS?

ASK FOR A PHOTO FROM UNDER THE CHAIR SO YOU CAN SEE THE CONSTRUCTION
